borrowed thoughts

This too shall come to pass…

If I can endure for this minute
Whatever is happening to me,
No matter how heavy my heart is
Or how dark the moment may be

If I can remain calm and quiet
With all the world crashing about me,
Secure in the knowledge God loves me
When everyone else seems to doubt me

If I can but keep on believing
What I know in my heart to be true,
That darkness will fade with the morning
And that this will pass away, too

Then nothing in life can defeat me
For as long as this knowledge remains
I can suffer whatever is happening
For I know God will break all of the chains

That are binding me tight in the darkness
And trying to fill me with fear
For there is no night without dawning
And I know that my morning is near.

I couldn’t resist putting up these quotes here. Though amusing, they make a great deal of sense, given the way software is being developed. Anyone who’s been in the software field for more than a day (no, make it an hour) would agree with me :)

——————————

UNIX is simple. But It just needs a genius to understand its simplicity.
–Dennis Ritchie

Theory is when you know something, but it doesn’t work. Practice is when something works, but you don’t know why it works. Programmers combine theory and practice: Nothing works and they don’t know why.

If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilisation.
-Gerald Weinberg

One of the main causes of the fall of the Roman Empire was that, lacking zero, they had no way to indicate successful termination of their C programs.

–Robert Firth

There are two ways to write error-free programs; only the third works.
–Alan J. Perlis

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.
–Will Rogers

Programmers are in a race with the Universe to create bigger and better idiot-proof programs, while the Universe is trying to create bigger and better idiots. So far the Universe is winning.
–Anon

Einstein argued that there must be simplified explanations of nature, because God is not capricious or arbitrary. No such faith comforts the software engineer.
–Fred Brooks, Jr.

I’ve finally learned what “upward compatible” means. It means we get to keep all our old mistakes.
–Dennie van Tassel

Rules of Optimization:
Rule 1: Don’t do it.
Rule 2 (for experts only): Don’t do it yet.

–M.A. Jackson

Every program has (at least) two purposes: the one for which it was written, and another for which it wasn’t.
–Alan J. Perlis

Why is there still so much pain and suffering being produced when there’s so little demand for it?

Every time I close the door on reality, it comes in through the window.

I always like to know what I’m doing, but there are times when nobody will tell me.

I could do great things, if I weren’t so busy doing little things.

Please don’t lie to me, unless you’re absolutely sure I’ll never find out the truth.

I either want less corruption, or more chance to participate in it.

I too am a member of the human race, (but admittedly not a very active member).

Cheer up! The worst effects of what we’re doing won’t be felt until after we’re all dead

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack at once

Life may have no meaning — or even worse, it may have a meaning of which I disapprove.

It’s human to make mistakes and some of us are more human than others

Women can do anything men can do, but often have more sense than even to be interested.

Don’t be afraid — I’m right behind you (using you as a shield).

It’s good to know that if I behave strangely enough, society will take full responsibility for me.

Please don’t ask me what the score is, I’m not even sure what the game is.

Try to be the best of what you are, even if what you are is no good.

I don’t understand you. You don’t understand me. What else do we have in common?

Not only don’t I know what tomorrow will bring, I’m still not entirely certain what yesterday brought.

And the best one: Why does life keep teaching me lessons I have no desire to learn?

If you like the kind of humour I like, am sure you’ll love the big list here. Yes, whatever I’ve posted here was lifted straight from that link but wasn’t I sweet enough to let you know the source? ;)

I don’t know who came up with this poem but it’s something I’d like to keep in mind now and always

“we cannot grow in future unless we let go of the past”

————

Don’t Look Back

As you travel through life, there are always those times
When decisions just have to be made;
When the choices are hard and solutions seem scarce,
And the rain seems to soak your parade.

There are some situations where all you can do
Is to simply let go and move on,
Gather courage together and choose a direction
That carries you toward a new dawn.

So pack up your troubles and take a step forward-
The process of change can be tough,
But think about all the excitement ahead,
If you can be stalwart enough.

There could be adventures you never imagined
Just waiting around the next bend -
And wishes and dreams just about to come true
In ways you can’t yet comprehend.

Perhaps you’ll find friendships that spring from new interests
As you challenge your status quo,
And you learn there are so many options in life
And so many ways you can grow.

Perhaps you’ll go places you never expected
And see things you’ve never seen -
Or travel to fabulous far-away worlds
And wonderful spots in between.

Perhaps you’ll find warmth and affection and caring -
A “somebody special” who’s there
To help you stay centered and listen with interest
To stories and feelings you share.

Perhaps you’ll find comfort in knowing your friends
Are supportive of all that you do -
And believe that whatever decisions you make,
They’ll be the right choices for you.

So keep putting one foot in front of the other,
And taking your life day by day.
There’s a brighter tomorrow that’s just down the road,
Don’t look back, you’re not going that way.

If I knew it would be the last time I’d see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly and “pray the Lord, your soul to keep.”

If I knew it would be the last time I’d see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss you, and call you back for more

If I knew it would be the last time I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time I could spare an extra minute or so
to stop and say “I love you,” instead of assuming you would know I do.

If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day,
I’m sure you’ll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there’s always tomorrow to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance to make everything right.

There will always be another day, to say our “I love you’s”,
and certainly there’s another chance to say our “Anything I can do’s?”.

But, just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get,
I’d like to say how much I love you, and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike,
and today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight.

So, if you’re waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today?
For, if tomorrow never comes, you’ll surely regret the day…

That you didn’t take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss,
and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.

So, hold your loved ones close today, and whisper in their ear,
that you love them very much and you’ll always hold them dear.

Take time to say “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” “thank you,” or “its okay”.
And if tomorrow never comes, you’ll have no regrets about today.
